Winter Driving Tips & A Survival Kit for Your Car

Categories:

It may be hard to believe but winter will be coming one of thOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAese days. While we haven’t been hit by the frigid temperatures or snow yet, we can almost promise that it will roll in sooner rather then later. With cold temperatures, ice, and snow on the horizon, it’s helpful to review some winter driving tips.

Oil Check: Look through your owners manual for specific oil changes. The conditions in which you drive and the car you own will vary how frequent your car oil needs to be changed.

Check Your Battery: The cold can be extremely harsh on a car’s battery. If your battery is more then three years old, we suggest having a professional take a look at it for you.

Consider Winter Tires: Uneven tire pressure can reduce your car’s gas mileage, cut back on traction and can cause uneven tread wear. We suggest having your tires rotated around every 5,000 to 7,500 miles and have your tire pressure check every month(especially in the winter).

Lights: Your car lights are as important then ever during the winter, not just for seeing through the dark, and dreary conditions but for also allowing other cars to see you while on the road. Before you drive, clear off any debris from your headlights and make sure they are working properly

Winter emergency kit: During the winter, it’s safe to say that anything can happen while on the roads. Getting stuck in the snow is more common then you might think, so we recommend packing some essential items:

  • Battery jumper cables
  • Your Cell Phone and a car phone charger charger
  • Non-perishable food items such as water, sports drinks and energy bars.
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • First-aid kit, winter clothing and snow gear and blankets. Bring the same clothes you would need if going sledding outside.
  • If stuck in the snow, kitty litter or sand will help you get out
  • A snow shovel, and a snow brush/ice scrapper.

In the event of an emergency, each of these items will make your life a whole lot easier. If you develop a car issue this winter and need help, please feel free to give us a call at 617-364-1722 or fill out a contact form.

Top Tips For Winter Car Storage

Categories:

For those that have classic, luxury and sports cars, the winter season is the time of the year that marks the end of their driving season. To keep your car in pristine and high-quality condition, it’s important that you properly store your car. Here are some helpful storage tips when preparing for winter car storage:

Storing Location: Be sure that you choose a safe, and dry building where you car can stay during the winter. A garage works great, but if you don’t have one, a facility with a concrete floor is a must. Bare earth such as an old barn is not optimal.

Engine Oil: Check the engine oil with a dipstick. If it’s dirty, your car has reached its mileage limit and you should change it before storage.

Wash and Clean: Before storing your car, you should also complete one final wash. This way, you can ensure there is no dirt or any debris left on the surfaces for an extended period.

Tires: Before storage, also inflate your tires to the maximum PSI rating. This will prevent any chances of flat spots from developing. You should also leave the car in neutral without the parking brake turned on. Automatic transmission vehicles can be left in park but otherwise, be sure to block the tires to prevent any moving.

Ventilation: Roll down your cars windows to allow proper circulation. This way, moisture won’t build up inside the cabin.

Pest Prevention: Rodents often seem to find their way into garages and make it their home for the winter. If these rodents make it into parts of the car, they can run havoc on the wires. To be safe, take a ball of steel wool and place it in the exhaust pipe opening and air inlet. You can also place laundry fabric sheets in the cabin and trunk and place moth balls around the perimeter of the vehicle.

Car Cover: As a finishing touch, use a quality and tight cover which also allows the car to get some air.

Theses suspensions stand apart from the competition. Here are some of the different aspects of the suspension that allows it run at such a high level.

It’s All About The Ride: The variety of suspension line-up offerings allows the perfect option whether you are looking for a supple ride, increased cornering or if you just want to be lower. BBM pledges to only deliver the highest quality products, and for that regard, it is a great match for Audi.

Wheel Spacers: Only one rule applies, when it comes to all-out-cornering performance and that’s that, wider is really better. Without spending the time and money for bigger wheels and tires, H&R wheel spacers allows you to balance the handling & performance of your car in order to suit your aggressive driving style.

H&R Springs: H&R special springs offers three stages of spring kits. Three different modifications and stages offer the rider exactly what they are looking for. Stage 1 springs provide minimal lowering level and a more aggressive stance. Stage 2 offers more of a styling appearance and 25%-30% increased stiffness. The final, third stage has extreme lowering as well as a firmer and higher performance ride.

The different aspects of a car’s suspension are in-depth. Above are just a few different variations and options that an Audi vehicle provides for it’s drivers. For more information about you Audi’s suspension, feel free to give us a call at 617-364-1722 or fill out our online contact form.

How to Defog Your Car Windshield

Categories:

imgresGetting in your car and having fogging windows can be a stressful and an annoying situation at any point of the day. Whether it be early in the morning or not, it slows down your commute and can make you late. Luckily, we have a few tips that let you defog your car’s windshield in seconds.

  • One of the more common times in which fogging occurs is during cold and rainy days. It is the difference between the temperature and humidity, inside and outside of the vehicle, which is a primary cause of the fog.
  • To allow your car windshield to defog, we suggest that you let air circulate freely throughout the vehicle. You can simply lower some of the windows and within a few minutes your car will defog.
  • If this doesn’t work, apply the hot air from your car’s heating system directly onto the window. Just crank up the defrosters and you should be good to go.
  • Besides the hot air, you can actually also use the air condoning and cold system of your car. Although it can work, the moisture will evaporate slower because cold air can’t hold as much moisture as warmer air.
  • Rubbing your hands on glass to remove fog temporarily, but it will leave a dirty look. It is suggested you use a mixture of soap and water before cleaning the windows. After cleaning the windows, pass a dry cloth around to remove any of the solution.

When raining, these are two extremely important aspects of your car that you need working. In case you get stuck, think about leaving a bag of salt or kitty litter in your car.

Be sure to break extra early and even more gradually than you usually do.

Use extra caution when crossing running water: Enough running water can easily move your car, and even an SUV. If you are unsure about the depth of running water, just turn around and find an alternate route.

What to do once your car starts to hydroplane: Hydroplaning can be one of the scariest things to experience while driving. This happens when all four of your wheels lose contact between the tire and the road. It is suggested that you don’t brake abruptly or turn the wheel. Instead, simply release the gas pedal slowly keep steering straight until you gain traction with the road. If you are in a situation where you must break, lightly apply your foot to the brake pedal. You can also decrease your odds of hydroplaning by following along the tracks created by the car in front of you; just be sure you aren’t following too close.

Don’t Text and Drive!

Categories:

Texting and driving is one of the more dangerous acts you can make while driving. Texting while driving increases your chances of crashing by up to 23 times. According to the National Safety Council, around 1,600,000 accidents happen per year because of texting and driving. The numbers stand for themselves, and it breaks our hearts that lives are at risk every day because people’s eyes are taken off the road.

When driving, the minimal amount of time your attention is taken off the road, is around 5 seconds. While traveling at 55mph for these 5 seconds, it would equate to driving an entire football field without even looking at the field. While teenagers are a big portion of drivers who text, parents and older demographics are also guilty of this too. Just about 27% of teenagers have actually claimed to see a parent text while driving.

Texting and driving has become the leading cause of deaths by teen drivers. Keeping your eyes on the road will not only improve your safety but also the safety of innocent people around you. If getting caught and paying $100 doesn’t keep you from texting, we hope your safe being does!
